&S® Cycle, along with TP Engineering, invited members of the media to the S&S Emissions Certification Laboratory in La Crosse, Wisconsin recently for an emissions roundtable discussion with Tom Austin of Sierra Research.
The roundtable discussion focused on the future of custom bike building through 49- and 50-State Certified Engines, the legal exemptions and small volume original equipment manufacturers. Throughout the day, conversation was lively and spirited, with everyone seeing that the current laws and regulations—based currently on the EPA issued Letter of Guidance—allow for easy bike building and registration.
Senior representatives from Drag Specialties participated in the roundtable and were impressed with the number of options available to the home and shop builder.      Tom Motzko of Drag Specialties said, “We want our dealers to clearly understand that they can build a compliant bike using products we will outline for them, beginning with an S&S or TP Engineering Certified engine. This will allow our dealers to enlighten their retail customers on how they can, legally, build a bike at home using certified products we will showcase in a special flier and eventually in our catalog.”
"Howard Kelly’s idea to invite the industry’s editors and publishers to an Emissions Summit was an excellent idea to preserve the future of custom bike building in the United States,” said S&S president, Brett Smith. “Getting the message out—accurately—through all the major industry publications is essential. I want to thank Tom Austin and the MIC for their gracious support and for TP and Drag’s attendance and support of the event.” Smith went on to say, “Perhaps the most promising outcome was Drag’s commitment to work with S&S, TP, and other emissions compliant/certified manufacturers to provide the builders, dealers, and enthusiasts with legally certified high-performance alternatives. The real message is that you can build bikes and we’re thankful that Drag is going to help spearhead this effort!”
S&S has invested heavily in the future of emissions compliant engines with the opening of an Emissions Certification Laboratory in the La Crosse, Wisconsin facility.      This lab will allow S&S to certify engines and components for EPA and California A.R.B. (Air Resources Board) use for both small volume manufacturers and home builders—and do complete vehicle certifications for Original Equipment manufacturers. The media roundtable should yield comprehensive articles on just what is—and is not—true when it comes to building a custom bike in today’s emission conscious world.

Seen from the second floor of the Saint Paul Rivercentre, an outstanding view of exhibits at the 21st Annual Donnie Smith Bike Show.

housands of motorcycle enthusiasts flocked to Minnesota’s Saint Paul Rivercentre Exhibition Hall in March for the 21st Annual Donnie Smith Bike Show. As they have in the past, inventive custom motorcycle bike show entries topped with parts and accessory application provided surprises that even the die-hard lifelong motorcycle enthusiast had not set eyes on until the show.
These very custom motorcycles drew scores of event-goers to the Drag Specialties booth to check out the Drag Specialties custom motorcycles on display, see the hottest FatBook parts and also ask questions and get instant answers from the specialized Drag Specialties staff.
Crowds also surrounded neighboring Brian Klock of Klock Werks, drawn to his latest best-seller Flare Windshield. Across the floor Jeff Ulvestad, Sales & Product Info at Independent Cycle, offered details on the Legend Air Suspension models in addition to information on the Hardlife and Lowlife chassis.
Bike shows like the Donnie Smith Bike Show showcase distinctiveness and individuality for V-Twins, and Drag Specialties is a behind them 100%.

German drag race veteran Acka Riemer does a burn out on his Drag Specialties’ sponsored “Tough Stuff.”

erman Drag Racing veteran Joachim “Acka” Riemer is about to start the 2008 Top Fuel Super Twins Season on his “Tough Stuff” Top Fuel Racer sponsored by Drag Specialties. Although the Drag Specialties team is hard at work for the opening of the European warehouse, Drag’s distinctive blue and white colors have already arrived on European Dragstrips and events like the hot “Bike & Music Weekend“ at Geiselwind near Würzburg.
A welcome break in mid-season, the Drag & Burnout Show at Geiselwind always attracts thousands of visitors who like to see rubber smoking. Riemer did not disappoint the crowd recently with his performance. Racing the full European Super Twins Top Fuel Championship in 2008 – and probably a few guest performances in the U.S. – the Riemer team is looking forward to a busy year. In 2007 they scored a stunning 5th place in the Championship – against very stiff competition.
The “Tough Stuff” frame was built by specialist Gunnar Olsson, featuring a 94-inch wheelbase. RC Components rear wheel and a combination of PM (front) and two Brembo 4-piston calipers stop the 335 kg monster-machine. Acka is a definite veteran of the European All Harley Drags, having raced almost all classes in about two decades of racing.
His engine is a PRP Shortblock 175"cubic-inch (2.850 cc), with homemade Billet-Aluminium heads and Mike Romine cams. His best times so far: 1/4 Mile 6.85s -329km/h, 1/8 Mile 4.44 - 268km/h – which “ain’t bad” for European tracks which are not as frequented as professional U.S. racetracks. Not to mention testing opportunities in Germany, which are nil. Which is why every chance to even test and tune the engine is welcome!
The Bike and Music Weekend 2008 is one of the hottest German events, scheduled in 2008 for August 7th to 10th – for “Motorheads“ certainly the place to be!
Go Acka!
