e continue to be amazed at how the Yamaha Rhino has developed into a sub-market segment virtually all by itself within the overall UTV market. The flow of the new products for them that are coming to the market doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon.
For the fourth installment of our 2006 Yamaha Rhino Project, we fine-tuned our performance upgrades featured in the August issue by adding a Dynatek performance coil to go with their ignition unit we had installed. We also added the new K&N High-Flow Intake System to let the motor breathe better. We still haven’t done anything with increased engine size or compression, cylinder mods or cams, yet have felt noticeable performance gains just from the K&N air intake, Dynatek ignition, Edelbrock carburetor and Supertrapp exhaust package we now have.
Since a weekend under the stars in the California desert allows for some night riding, we installed two sets of additional front lights from PIAA and lastly, having read about the new Legend Air Off-Road Suspension for the Rhinos, we had to see what they were all about. The popularity of the Yamaha Rhino has led to thousands of them being hauled in Toy Haulers and conventional trailers every weekend and overhead space is sometimes limited. One of the interesting features of the Legend air shocks is the adjustability from a high position, for extra clearance on the trails, to a low position for transporting.
Our project continues, so watch for further updates in the issues to come. Also, see your Parts Unlimited sales rep for more details about the products featured in this story.

K&N says its High-Flow Intake System for the Rhino provides a performance increase of over 4 horsepower with 3.5 additional foot-pounds of torque. The complete kits replaces the stock Yamaha air filter and air box with a complete redesign of the Rhino’s intake system that draws air through a reverse-tapered K&N Xstream RX filter and a powder coated aluminum intake tube. Also included is chrome crankcase breather, K&N Dry Charger, and carburetor Main Jet.

The perfect companion to the Dynatek FS Digital Ignition unit that we had previously installed is their DCK7-2 Performance coil. Together, CDI and coil allow the Rhino to rev well beyond the 7,700 rpm allowed by the stock rev limiter. The Dyna coil mounts where the stock coil was located and requires no additional tuning or engine modifications.

PIAA has been in the business of making lights and light kits for cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles since 1963. When it comes to night and inclement weather driving and riding, PIAA lights are a good thing to have guiding the way. We had previously installed some smaller spot lights, but at night you virtually can’t have too many, so we added a PIAA 5 1/8-inch diameter 540 light kit (seen on the front roll cage bar by the windshield) as well as the larger 7 15/16-inch 550 models on the front bumper rail. PIAA light kits include two lamps, wiring harness, relay, switch, and two mesh style lens covers.

Riders and retailers in the off-road world not familiar with the name Legend Air Suspension might think this is an all-new company just learning how to make shocks. Wrong. In fact Independent Cycle Inc created the Legend Air Suspension technology in concert with Gates Rubber Company back in 1998 for use on Harley-Davidson road bikes. That line continues today as a leading brand of products for V-Twin riders.
In 2007, the Legend Air concept was expanded to the UTV market with applications for Yamaha Rhino, Arctic Cat Prowler, the newly-released Polaris RZR and rear of the Polaris Ranger.
The new patent-pending Legend Air Suspension kit comes with everything needed to get running: two front and two rear shocks, five-valve solenoid, compressor, and twin two-way switch assembly for easy operation and adjustments right from the driver’s seat.
Height and ride adjustability feature prevents bottoming out situations under virtually any load weight or trail conditions, good ride quality—empty or loaded—and ability to lower the machine to fit into Toy Haulers or areas where machine height is an issue.

The “heart” of the air suspension package is the on-board compressor and solenoid board that mounts under the hood. |
