he Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series has wrapped up rounds 6 and 7 of the 2007 10-race season. The round 6 event was held at the beautiful Spring Creek Motocross Park outside Millville, Minnesota, while round 7 was a gruesome challenge in the woods near Boyers, Pennsylvania. The competition was fierce, and the points standings have taken an interesting turn. Jimmy Jarrett still holds the motorcycle points lead aboard his Moose Racing FMF Suzuki, but a DNF left him credited with 16th place and only 5 championship points in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Brian Garrahan collected 13 points for his 8th place finish aboard the big Moose Racing Yamaha 450 four-stroke. On the ATV side of the series, Moose Racing Honda rider Rob Zimmerman collected 38 points in the two rounds, while Andy Lagzdins won round 6 and finished 5th at round 7 to pick up 46 points.
Andy Lagzdins was back to 100-percent from a thumb injury when the series rolled into Minnesota. The Maryland racer stood atop the podium at his first visit to John Martin’s magnificent racing facility. Defending series champion Rob Zimmerman struggled through the day at Spring Creek. Two flat tires slowed Zimmerman’s progress, and he would have to settle for 2nd place. Two weeks later the green flag dropped at a hard-packed, dusty racecourse in Pennsylvania where both series leaders would fare poorly. Zimmerman struggled all day with lappers and difficult track conditions. He survived a roll backwards down a hill followed by his ATV rolling over him to take home an 8th place finish. Lagzdins managed a 5th place finish to step ahead of Zimmerman in the series points race. The current standings show Lagzdins in first place by just two points when factoring in a throw away round for each racer.
The motorcycle side of the series also had a great event in Minnesota. Moose Racing’s Jimmy Jarrett brought FMF Suzuki teammate Josh Strang along and the two stole the show. Jarrett and Strang finished 1st and 2nd in conditions that everyone called perfect. Things were very different in Pennsylvania. A steady rain during the motorcycle race turned the hard ground into a greasy mess. The ruts, rocks, and roots made conditions treacherous. Jarrett and Strang left the event early. Brian Garrahan struggled to collect 8th place. It was an interesting day.
Two young Moose Racing riders are starting to come on strong in the second half of the season. Fun Mart Yamaha racer Adam Bonneur collected 6th in Minnesota and ninth place in Pennsylvania. A string of top ten finishes has placed Bonneur in a battle for third in the Parts Unlimited series with Chris Bach and Aaron Wegner. Cycle Shed KTM Moose Racing rider Chris Bach closed his Minnesota race in 7th and the Pennsylvania round worked out even better for him. The young Indiana racer managed a 5th place finish. That marks his 6th top ten finish, and his 2nd top five. Bach now sits at the top of the third place contenders group.
With three rounds remaining in the season, the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series looks like a battle to the end. The ATV group is lead by Lagzdins and Zimmerman. The two Moose Racing Honda riders, along with a large core of other competitors, put on a great show at every event with some very intense competition. Jimmy Jarrett leads the motorcycle group with a healthy margin and Brian Garrahan appears to be locked in at second. Third place in the series is a very tight battle. Chris Bach and Adam Bonneur both carry the Moose Racing logo and both appear to be intent on capturing that third place Parts Unlimited Moose Racing title.
The competition remains exciting among the growing international group of motorcycle racers. The Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series is not the biggest in off-road racing, but it just might be some of the best racing action out there.
