e race, we win, you benefit,” is the mantra at Pro Circuit Racing. It has never been more true then in Motocross Lites racing this season where Pro Circuit’s teams and machinery have swept the podium several times and claimed another National Championship. At Pro Circuit they race because the track is the only place to figure out what works and what doesn’t. The shop is a good place to make sure that a product is technically sound, but if you don’t use and test a product in the environment that it is meant for, all you have is numbers. They race so you benefit from a better product, a product you can count on when you want to win. And Pro Circuit wins!
Pro Circuit’s Ryan Villopoto earned his second AMA Motocross Lites Championship in as many seasons on Sunday September 9th, 2007 at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. Villopoto took the title, but his Pro Circuit teammate, Ben Townley took the overall win in the final Motocross Lites battle of the season. Villopoto was crowned the AMA Motocross Lites Champion with a 19-point margin of victory, capping off an amazing season that saw Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki riders win all three major titles in the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross Lites classes.
Villopoto, who claimed sole possession of the points lead at Steel City, took control of his own destiny with a dominant win in the first moto at Glen Helen and then followed that up with a championship-winning second place finish in moto two. He finished second place overall and secured enough points to clinch his second-consecutive AMA Motocross Lites title.
“This year has been amazing,” said Villopoto. “The racing has been so close with Ben and there just wasn’t any room for slip-ups. You really had to bring your ‘A’ game every single moto. It was a long hard fight and I have to say that Ben is an extremely talented rider and I am fortunate for being able to race against him.”
Teammate Ben Townley, who trailed by 19 points heading into the final round, fell short of erasing his large point deficit but still turned in a fine ride en route to a 2-1 moto finish and the overall win, his sixth of the season. Townley finished second overall on the season.
“It’s hard to swallow losing a championship, but I have to admit that I have had a great year,” said Townley. “I have had a whole season without any injuries, a Supercross title and an outdoor season that went all the way to the wire. It has been an awesome experience with the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team and I feel like I couldn’t have been in a better place.”
Brett Metcalfe put in two strong rides landing his Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX250F on the podium in both motos with a 3-3 for third overall, which earned him seventh overall in the final standings despite missing five rounds of racing. With Townley winning, Villopoto second and Metcalfe third, it also marked another historic sweep of the Lites podium for Pro Circuit. Sweeping the podium has become a habit for the Pro Circuit team this year.
And winning Championships is another long established habit for Pro Circuit who started winning 125cc (now Lites) Championships way back in 1991 with a young rider named Jeremy McGrath. Since then, most of the best riders in history have ridden Pro Circuit machinery to Motocross and Supercross titles, including Ricky Carmichael, Ivan Tedesco, Grant Langston, Ben Townley and Ryan Villopoto. This year, Townley took the Supercross Lites East title while Villopoto took the Supercross Lites West title and the Motocross Lites Championship.
