n our two previous installments about the Parts Magazine Yamaha Rhino project we addressed things like bumpers, extra lighting, side doors, tires and wheels and other running gear. In this issue we are reporting on our latest round of upgrades that focused on some performance enhancements with a few other additions that go hand in hand with increased speed potential.
In this report you’ll see how the addition of an Edelbrock carburetor kit, Dynatek ignition and SuperTrapp Mudslinger really brought the Rhino to life. Top speed went up about 10 miles an hour and it really hummed along great through the deep sand washes in the desert.
With more speed, it seemed timely to improve our braking capability, so we installed a set of DP Brake pads and Russell brake lines. At the same time we also installed some off-road seats with racing belts and had a local fabricator make us a T-handle grab bar for the passenger to hold on to.
Without question, our Yamaha Rhino is more fun every time we take it out to the desert to try our latest batch of additions and modifications. And we’re not done yet, so stay tuned!

Dynatek’s Dyna FS Ignition System installation on our Rhino gave us a noticeable increase in rpm capability and allowed the motor to take advantage of the additional intake and exhaust flow we also installed.

The new Edelbrock carburetor kit for the Yamaha Rhino 660 is a direct bolt-on enhancement. The adjustable accelerator pump offers instant throttle response and easy starting capability. As the photo shows, kit includes hoses, cables, jets, etc.

The SuperTrapp Mudslinger exhaust adds a deep, throaty sound, yet is 96 db compliant. Its low-restriction mechanical core design offers superior flow and a dramatic increase in torque and throttle response.

Russell’s Cycleflex brake lines feature a Teflon® inner liner supported by a rugged 308 stainless steel outer jacket. This lightweight combination can withstand prolonged flexing and vibration without expanding, for better braking performance.

DP Brake Pads are known world-wide for their sintered-metal compound construction, which deliver high tech performance in all conditions. Pads have a quick break-in period and provide consistent, hard stops and fade-free performance.

Mastercraft seats are not sold through traditional motorcycle channels, so we had to special order a set of seats for our Rhino. We got them, not because we needed a softer seat but for the 5-point Baja-style harness system that you get with them.

There are not a lot of places for a passenger to hold on, so John Matherson of Mission Motorsports had a local fabricator make us this nifty gripped T-handle. It is welded to a cross bar that mounts to the front down tubes on both sides of the frame.
