mong the many changes inside the new ‘07 Harleys is a switch to hydraulic cam-chain tensioners. JIMS has the new tools needed to work on these bikes. Cam swaps are at the top of a performance seekers “to do” list and JIMS had even worked up a step-by-step procedure for this ever-popular job. As always it starts by removing the ground cable from the battery, draining the oil and removing the pushrods. When swapping cams it’s always good practice to replace the cam bearings, and in a late-Harley that’s the inner cam bearings in the case. No sweat, though. JIMS has that covered.
Start by removing the cam cover and using JIMS Cam Locking Tool No. 994 (Drag# 3801-0060) remove the two cam- and crank-sprocket retaining bolts. Remove all screws holding the cam support plate to the case and slip out the support plate with the cam assembly. A snap ring holds the front cam in place; remove it and then remove both cams from the cam support. Now’s the time to remove those inner cam bearings. JIMS Inner Cam Bearing Remover Tool No. 993 (Drag# 3801-0061) does it. Thoroughly clean out the cam chest and install new full compliment inner cam bearing using JIMS Inner Cam Bearing Installer Tool No. 991 (Drag # 3801-0064).
Before reassembly carefully check that support plate for excessive wear to the cam bores. Place the new cams into JIMS Cam Assembly Tool No. 990 keeping the chain properly aligned. Apply assembly lube to all bearing surfaces and the cams themselves, snap a new retaining ring onto the front cam, slide the cams and support plate assembly back in place, thread in all screws and torque to spec. JIMS Tool No 994 will keep things from turning when you re-install the sprockets, gears, chains and bolts and torque everything to spec. Replace the cam cover using a new gasket and you’re done. One TC96 hi-po cam swap completed.
You’ll be seeing lots of these ‘07 bikes in the shop. Now’s the time to tool up. JIMS has what you need, and it’s all available right now through Drag Specialties.
