s we went to press, the results were just coming in from the final AMA roadrace National of the season and Ben Spies of Team Yoshimura and Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes were crowned as class champions of 2006. Spies needed only a 13th or better finish at the season finale at Mid-Ohio to win his first-ever AMA Superbike championship, and he capped off the season with a carefully run 7th place finish to finish the season ahead of Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Mat Mladin by 8 points.
The drama was significantly more intense for Hayes, however, in the Formula Xtreme race. The Parts Unlimited-sponsored Erion Honda rider started the race with a mere two-point lead in the championship over Team Yamaha’s Eric Bostrom. Hayes passed Bostrom early in the Formula Xtreme race and sped to both a race victory and season title.

eam USA, which included Thor stars Ryan Villopoto and Ivan Tesdesco, won the 60th edition of the historic Motocross of Nations ahead of Teams Belgium and New Zealand. In spite of threatening weather, a record breaking attendance of over 60,000 patriotic fans flocked to the Matterly Basin Circuit in the UK to see the Americans claim their 17th title and rewrite the history books as the most successful motocross nation in this event.
Newly crowned AMA Motocross Lites champion, Ryan Villopoto, impressed the masses with his solid 3-2 performance which was closely followed by New Zealand’s Ben Townley (5-3), handing the Thor-clad Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki duo 1st and 2nd in the individual MX2 classifications.
With Belgian Stefan Everts dominating both motos over America’s James Stewart in an impressive final moto duel, Ivan Tedesco’s 6-9 result was enough to put TEAM USA on top of the box as “Hot Sauce” stepped in at the last minute to replace an injured Ricky Carmichael.
The Motocross of Nations will move to Budds Creek, Maryland for 2007 where TEAM USA will be even harder to beat on home soil.

ake Johnson will go down in the record books as the first Ford Quality Checked Grand National Singles Champion. Johnson, the 22-year-old American Suzuki rider from Franklinville, N.J., overcame a first-turn crash to finish ninth at the final round in Springfield, Ill. on Sept. 2 to secure the title.
The Grand National Singles Championship is a new AMA National Championship instituted this year that features single-cylinder Grand National racing motorcycles racing on short track and TT circuits. The Grand National Twins feature twin-cylinder racing machines on the bigger half-mile and mile flat tracks.
This marks the first national title for Johnson. He won the series with a string of consistent top-10 finishes including a victory at the historic Castle Rock TT National in August. “I don’t think it’s set in yet,” Johnson said of his accomplishment. “It definitely feels good. It was a goal of mine since I started racing.”
The championship battle came down to the final event. Johnson said he may have sprouted a few gray hairs at the Springfield Finale. His entire season flashed before his eyes when he was caught up in a first-lap, first-turn crash in the final. “Jimmy Wood and Sam Halbert went down in front of me and I hit them and went over the handlebars,” Johnson said. “While this was all going on I just had to laugh. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me.” Fortunately Johnson’s bike wasn’t damaged too badly and he was able to make the restart and cruise to the finish for the championship.
Johnson was near the top of the standings all season. He was second in the points chase to Bryan Smith after the opening two rounds in Daytona in March. He then trailed Joe Kopp in the standings after the Springfield TT over Memorial Day weekend. Johnson finally broke through to the series lead after winning at Castle Rock in August, and held the lead the rest of the way.
Johnson rode a Parts Unlimited-sponsored Suzuki RMZ450-based machine tuned by Ronnie Brown. He split time between a Suzuki with a flat track frame and one with the stock frame.

ave Mungenast was a lifelong motorcyclist, competing in numerous competitive events and activities in his life, including nine ISDTs, the Baja 1000 and he was also an annual participant in the Colorado 500 Trail Ride. For a time he performed motorcycle stunts as a Hollywood movie stuntman and was featured in numerous motion pictures between 1976 and 1985. He served his country as an Army Green Beret and was qualified as an underwater demolition expert, a paratrooper, and a member of the Honor Guard of Korea. He went on to open and operate numerous stores in the St. Louis area with his sons, Dave Jr., Ray and Kurt, selling Honda motorcycles and cars, as well as Acura, Lexus, Toyota and Dodge. Dave had many causes that he believed in strongly. One that supported his passion of motorcycling was the Motorcycle Heritage Foundation that operates the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum at the AMA campus in Pickerington, Ohio. Until his illness forced him to stop, he had served on its Board of Directors for many years. Another cause he believed in was the importance of the Boy’s Clubs and he was an active supporter of the Boy’s Club of St. Louis.
