ord Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned backed Chris Carr, the current Twins division points leader on the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship tour, took some time off in late July to stretch his legs a bit – to the tune of 300-plus mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats!
In preparation for a world motorcycle land speed record attempt at the upcoming Motorcycle International Speed Trials by BUB, Carr and the Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited-sponsored BUB Enterprises team have made frequent trips to Bonneville recently in order to give Carr time to adapt to the unique aspects of piloting a land speed motorcycle.
Carr’s foray into the world of land speed records began earlier this summer with the BUB team actually towing the streamliner for the first few times out at 60 mph behind a truck just to get the feel of the unique ride. Since then Carr has been back to the Salt Flats on several occasions, gradually making his way up to NASCAR-like speeds before hitting 243 mph early in July.
Commenting on his most recent test, the seven-time AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship champion said: “It was unreal. It took us 2.6 miles to hit 300, then another mile and three-quarters to slow down. The record is 323 mph and, ultimately, this BUB streamliner has the potential to run in the 330s (mph).”

The power plant of the Bub Enterprises streamliner was purpose-built for one use: to set the world’s motorcycle land speed record. The next planned attempt should come the first week in September during the Motorcycle International Speed Trials by BUB. |

Chris Carr prepares for a practice run at Bonneville in July. The current AMA/Ford Quality Checked Flat Track champion, Carr is the winningest active racer in that sport with 73 wins and seven AMA/Ford QC Flat Track championship titles. |

s we went to press, the BUB International Speed Trials had just concluded and the highlight of the meet clearly was the duel for the ultimate world motorcycle speed record between Chris Carr in Denis Manning’s Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Ford Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned-sponsored streamliner versus Rocky Robinson in the Mike Ackatiff-built Top 1 Ack Attack Hyabusa.
Robinson was the first to break the existing world’s record held by Dave Campos and Easyriders with a two-way average of 342.797 mph. The next day it was Carr stealing the show, however, with a two-way average of 350.884 in his first and only runs of the meet. As reported in the news item above, Carr, Manning and the BUB Enterprises team tested at Bonneville in late July and they were clearly ready to go for the BUB International Speed Trials. We’ll have a full report in our next issue.

he Motorcycle Industry Council reports that on July 25, 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted an on-highway motorcycle engine emissions certification option, based on a proposal by the MIC and its American V-Twin Committee. This option allows a small volume manufacturer, custom builder, assembler and individual to purchase and install an engine that has already been EPA certified in another motorcycle, without having to recertify the motorcycle, as long as reasonable criteria are met.
In early 2005, the MIC American V-Twin Committee expressed concern that it may take years to incorporate the option of an engine certification program into the EPA regulations. It was suggested that a Manufacturer Guidance Letter would be a more expedient means for providing such a program, as similar provisions have been provided to manufacturers through such letters in the past. The EPA asked the MIC to put its thoughts together in a draft Guidance Letter for their consideration and MIC responded quickly.
Ted Sands, of Performance Machine, Inc. and Chair of the MIC American V-Twin Committee, states, “This is great news, not only for the custom motorcycle market, but for the V-Twin industry as a whole. Without this option, there is no alternative to the full-blown vehicle certification, and many small builders would simply not be able to comply with the EPA regulations.”
Until now, custom motorcycle builders and small volume manufacturers were required to conduct the elaborate vehicle testing and certification required by the EPA emissions regulations. To certify one engine family can cost in excess of $10,000, not including the much higher cost and time that can be associated with the development of engine calibrations that comply with the emissions standards in the first place.
Under this option, a small volume manufacturer of highway motorcycles; a producer, seller, or assembler of highway motorcycle kits; or an individual is not required to apply for or receive EPA certification to install an engine certified under this procedure, provided such person:
1) Installs a certified engine and emission related components following the installation instructions provided by the engine manufacturer.
2) Does not install the engine in a vehicle that exceeds the weight and gearing limits used to certify the engine and also does not modify the engine and emission related components in a way which could reasonably be expected to affect emissions.
3) Uses or installs the evaporative emission system parts supplied or specified by the engine manufacturer; for engines certified to permeation standards.
4) Permanently affixes the required engine manufacturer’s label in a readily accessible location on the vehicle.
5) Assures that the owners manual and warranty booklet are provided to the ultimate purchaser.
The complete Manufacturer Guidance Letter, titled Certification Procedure for Highway Motorcycle Engines, CISD-06-15 (MC), may be accessed on the MIC website at www.mic.org. under the V-Twin section. It will also be posted on the EPA website, along with other useful certification documents at www.epa.gov/otaq/roadbike.htm.

OTO-ST series officials have announced that the new endurance motorcycle racing series’ inaugural event will be an eight- hour event on the famed 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course on Saturday, October 21. The “8 Hours at Daytona,” which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET, will be held in conjunction with the speedway’s annual Fall Cycle Scene weekend, October 19-22.
The 8 Hours at Daytona will offer $100,000 in purse and lap money to be shared among the teams and riders competing in the historic first event.
