Yamaha of Troy’s Brett Metcalfe rode to a second place finish in the Motocross Lites class at Hangtown on Pirelli’s Scorpion MX front and rears.

irelli, with its long history of winning championships around the world, is putting its knowledge and focus into Motocross racing in the United States.
Chris Wall, Pirelli’s Marketing Manager, said, “We were extremely excited for the corporate office to give us the green light to put forth a serious effort and investment in racing in America. With our new racing program we’re planning for steady growth in results and performance levels, and using this knowledge to produce a line of Motocross tires built to perform in the unique and varying terrain of the MX tracks in the United States.”
Pirelli’s dirt-racing effort started with John Dowd in the 2003 Outdoor MX Championship; from there Pirelli challenged the 2005 National Arenacross Series, where they won the championship with Richmond Kawasaki and Darcy Lange.      Pirelli grew that success into sponsorship of Yamaha of Troy, competing in both Supercross and the outdoor Motocross championship in 2006. The partnering with Yamaha of Troy led to podiums in the 2006 Supercross Lites class and a second and third in the opening round of the Motocross Lites class at Hangtown in California, scored by riders Brett Metcalfe and Andrew McFarlane, each using Pirelli’s Scorpion MX mid soft front and rear.
Josh Whitmire, Pirelli’s Racing Development Technician, said, “The development and testing we have achieved with John Dowd and now working with Yamaha of Troy gives Pirelli a wealth of information and rider feedback, which we feed directly to the engineers working on the new Scorpion MX line. It was great seeing the team run new production product before the end of the Supercross season. Pirelli’s quick development turnaround directly benefits the average motocrosser. Our racing and testing–especially with John Dowd Racing and Yamaha of Troy over the last year–has led to the development of an all-new line of tires: the Scorpion MX line.”
The Scorpion line of tires consists of the Scorpion MX Soft (MXS) Sandy and Muddy Terrain representing the evolution of the MT410 and MT44, the ultimate tire for sand races proven by podium finishes in both classes in 2005 at Southwick.      The Scorpion MX MidSoft (MXMS) soft to medium terrain (the evolution of the MT32) has well known and unbeatable performance and now improved production technology and lighter weight. It’s available in both 18” (MT32) and 19” fitment, as well as a full range of mini sizes for younger racers. Then there’s the Scorpion MX MidHard (MXMH) medium to hard terrain tire (the replacement of the MT450) with a new bi-directional rear with improved tread pattern, greater durability, increased traction and stability. Finishing out the line is the Scorpion MX Hard (MXH) hard or rocky terrain, developed in Arenacross, Supercross and testing for the outdoor nationals. This new combination of Scorpion tires is sure to be a favorite for hard pack, blue-groove riders everywhere. Pirelli now has a tire for every track composition and condition.
Focusing on the North American market, Pirelli has made a commitment with the introduction of this new line of Scorpion MX tires. This commitment is complemented by working with these top teams: UNITED STATES: Team Yamaha of Troy, Team Richmond Racing, John Dowd, Maestro Suzuki, TUF Racing and Zip Ty (Ty Davis) Racing, CANADA: Factory KTM, Factory Suzuki, and Factory Kawasaki MX teams.
Following Pirelli’s long history of selling what it races and racing what it sells, the new line of Scorpion MX tires has proven itself with results. The Scorpion tires now have a more defined product selection specifically developed for the North American market on North American tracks. Each new Scorpion MX tire carries Pirelli’s proven record of winning 45 World Championships (MXGP) including 2005 with Stefan Everts. When you combine the performance of the new Pirelli Scorpion MX line with the strong programs offered through Parts Unlimited, the dealer and the consumer both win. After all, Pirelli tires give every racer a chance to win by always selling what it races and racing what it sells.
