addlemen has announced their AMA Pro flat track sponsorship plans for 2006. Riders of factory-backed teams from Harley-Davidson, Honda, and Yamaha will be riding with Saddlemen support for the 2006 season.
On the “metric” side of the sport, Saddlemen is sponsoring Yamaha-backed Team Memphis Shades/Parts Unlimited, whose rider J.R. Schnabel hails from West Bend, Wisconsin. J.R. turned pro in 1995, and finished the 2005 season in ninth place with two wins at Springfield, at the May 28th TT and the September 3rd Short Track. Twenty-six -year-old J.R. was the AMA’s 1996 Rookie of the Year.
Saddlemen is also helping last year’s fourth place finisher and 2004 Rookie of the Year, 19-year-old Jared Mees. He is returning this year with backing by two factories; Harley-Davidson for his XR750 program, and American Honda for his CRF450 short track program. Mees joins full factory-backed riders Rich King and Kenny Coolbeth, and fellow support rider Bryan Smith on the Harley roster.
When asked for comment, Mees said, “Like everyone else, I’ve always dreamed of being a factory rider, but I wanted to be able to keep the tuner that I’ve had since day one. Lancaster Harley-Davidson is going to be supporting us, and Johnny Goad is still going to be turning the wrenches for us. It is pretty much going to be identical to last year, with added support from Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson. Saddlemen is also on board with us again.”
Saddlemen has a long history of supporting racing. Saddlemen’s President Tom Seymour says “It’s important that Saddlemen is involved with giving something back to our sport. Racing brings us an opportunity to connect with the fans, and to let them know that we’re enthusiasts, too. Helping up-and-coming racers is near to my heart, because I was once a racer, too.”
Saddlemen manufactures seats, gel pads, and a full line of motorcycle luggage in Rancho Dominguez, California.

ith a long and storied history of supporting racing at every level, it came as no surprise to see motorcycle wheel and brake manufacturer Performance Machine put together a competitive NHRA Pro Stock team. With the talented Gino Scali piloting and proven Suzuki power, they’re looking for an exciting 2006 season.
March 16-19, the Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida was Team PM’s first event and saw them come out of the trailer with a 7.177 against Matt Smith’s Buell. Scali bettered that time to a 7.142 and defeated Ryan Schnitz in the quarterfinals before a red light in the semi ended his streak. Not bad for the first race of the season and a fresh team.
Look for the Performance Machine Pro Stock Suzuki Team and Geno Scali at all NHRA championship drag race events in 2006.

AMA and AMA Pro Racing have announced that Joel Grover has been hired to the new position of Supermoto Director, and will be relocating to AMA’s Pickerington, Ohio headquarters from his home in upstate New York. Grover will oversee both the AMA Supermoto Championship presented by Parts Unlimited as well as the AMA Sports Supermoto Grand Championships in association with NASMOTO.
Grover will report to Doug Neubauer, Vice President of AMA Sports, and will be directly focused on moving AMA Supermoto forward as a premier form of motorcycle competition.
“Joel brings a solid level of experience to his position and we’re delighted to have him aboard to help guide AMA Supermoto to the next level,” said Patricia DiPietro, AMA CEO. DiPietro added that aligning professional and amateur Supermoto under one organizational structure will help solidify the relatively new racing discipline and set the stage for continued growth and a better progression of riders from amateur to professional racing.
“I am proud to be part of such a committed organization to the sport and tradition of motorcycling,” says enthusiast Grover, referring to the AMA’s 85 year heritage. “Furthermore, I am extremely excited about the opportunity to help Supermoto realize its amazing potential.”
Grover has been employed in the motorsports business since 1998 holding a variety of positions in operations and event management. Additionally, Grover was the Assistant Director of Supercross for Clear Channel Motor Sports from 2000-2002.

John Dowd, who finished second overall at the 2005 Maxxis EnduroCross has announced that he will be returning in 2006 to take on the top off-road racers in the world at the toughest indoor off-road race in America.
“I had so much fun last year that I definitely want to come back for this year’s race,” explained Dowd, a former national motocross champion. “I had no idea what I was getting into last year... I barely had time to ride the bike before the race, but it turned out to be a great event. It was a very technical and tough track but it made for great racing.”
David Knight was the overall winner in 2005 with Dowd finishing a few seconds behind in second place after battling it out with the young and up-and-coming Ricky Dietrich. “It was really no surprise to see John do so well,” claims Eric Peronnard, co-promoter of the event. “A lot of the top motocrossers have a strong background in woods or trails riding. Combine that with their motocross skills and it makes for a perfect combination to ride EnduroCross.”
The Maxxis EnduroCross takes place inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, November 18. There is a Qualifier Round on Friday, November 17 where the top ten riders on that day will compete on Saturday night against the best off-road racers in the world. For more information about the event and to register for the Qualifier Round, go online to www.endurocross.com. Tickets for the event are available by calling 888-234-2334 or they may be purchased on line at www.orleansarena.com.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced that “AMA Team USA” will compete at the 2006 Motocross of Nations, scheduled for September 23 -24 at Matterley Basin/Winchester, Great Britain.
The presenting sponsor of AMA Team USA will be Loretta Lynn’s, which is marking its 25th year of hosting the AMA Air Nautiques Amateur Motocross National Championships at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
Motocross fans will be involved in choosing the members of AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn’s, by casting their votes at AMADirectlink.com, and will be able to contribute to an online fundraiser supporting the team.
The online nomination process, during which fans can suggest who should be considered for AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn’s, is underway. When the list of top vote-getters is posted in mid-June, fans will be able to vote on these final nominees, in return for a $5.00-per-vote contribution to the team.
The members of AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn’s, will be announced in August during the 2006 AMA Air Nautiques Amateur Motocross National Championships.
“The AMA is proud that this year’s team will compete as the reigning champions of the Motocross of Nations,” said AMA President Robert Rasor. “We know that American motocross fans will join us in supporting AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn’s, both with their votes and with their contributions, to help us bring home the winner's trophy again.”
“We’re also thrilled to have the support of Loretta Lynn’s as presenting sponsor of AMA Team USA,” Rasor continued. “Today’s top professional motocross racers all ‘grew up’ at Loretta Lynn’s, and we believe that this is a great way to celebrate our 25 year relationship.”
Often called “The Olympics of Motorcycling,” the Motocross of Nations features three-rider teams from around the world competing in three races, or motos. In 2005, the team of Ricky Carmichael, Kevin Windham, and Ivan Tedesco -- all “graduates” of the AMA amateur nationals at Loretta Lynn’s, and led by team manager Roger DeCoster -- defeated a strong international field to take the winner’s trophy for the 16th time, and for the first time since 2000. From 1981 to 1993, Team USA was undefeated in the Motocross of Nations, winning 13 straight times.
All proceeds from the online fundraiser will go toward supporting AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn’s. Final team selection will be made by the AMA.

Each race weekend this season at New Jersey’s Raceway Park has been plagued with unfortunate weather conditions, so event organizers Mickey Kessler and Rich Zupko have gotten used to spending the morning of the races in bulldozers clearing the top layer of muck from the track. At the event there in May, Thor support rider Frank Lettieri (#461) was the class of the mini field taking home the overall wins in both the 85cc 12-13 and Supermini classes. He also took home second place honors in the Schoolboy class. Thor/Part Unlimited prizes were given away to a random group of riders and Kayla Boorom even took home a new motorcycle courtesy of local dealer Monmouth Cycles.
