The massive changes being made at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for this year’s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix show how committed the management there is to give the MotoGP World Championship a permanent home in America. Seen here is one of the buildings along the front straight that had to be rebuilt after the track was widened going up over the hill towards Turn 1.

When the MotoGP riders asked for some changes to improve safety, the track responded with bulldozers, not shovels. This photo looks back down the hill from the Turn 7 Corkscrew to show one more area that was widened to allow a bit more margin of error in the heat of battle.
he crew in Rapid City, South Dakota, is definitely getting the job done. Remember that Lowlife Chassis Kit, the one we showcased last issue, the package that Tank Ewsichek turned into a stunner of a custom for the cover of this magazine and the 2006 FatBook? Well, Drag Specialties isn’t alone in taking special notice there. Independent Cycle’s Lowlife frame, the same one that’s in the FatBook, has just been awarded the “Frame Design Of The Year,” the presentation made at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati. Quite an honor, and the team at Independent Cycle/Legend Air is just getting warmed up.
Take a look at what they’ve done to their L3 and L9 air-ride suspension packages, both easy bolt-on air suspensions for Softail Harleys and customs. They’re easier than ever to install now and the switching and controls have been streamlined for ease of use. “We try to produce things that don’t look like they came straight off-the-shelf but actually do,” Jesse Jurrens says, and the revamped Legend L3 and L9 Air Suspension Systems–just like that award winning Lowlife frame–prove the point. These air-suspension systems fit all Softail model Harleys from 1989 on (the L9 kit is for the ‘89 through ‘99 models, the L3 fits the ‘00 through ‘06 bikes). At their heart both are the original, patented Legend Air Suspension Systems coming with and delivering everything that implies. And that’s a lot.
Air springs were actually developed almost a century ago, used primarily to cushion the load of heavy industrial hauling. It didn’t take long to discover that those air springs, properly sized and inflated, offered a great ride that could be adapted to cars and trucks. In 1998 Gates Rubber Co., an industry leader in air-spring technology and manufacturing, designed these air springs specifically for Legend Air’s Softail Harley applications. The rest, as they say, is history. Jesse Jurrens took off from there and hasn’t stopped yet. He’s even developed a second-generation Legend Air system for FL model Harleys, but it’s those Softail kits, the L3 and L9, that we’re concerned with here.
Both of these packages are completely made in the USA and both come with a one-year warranty. They’ll transform the looks, ride, handling and load-carrying capacity of a Harley Softail and they’re complete. Everything needed for this bolt-on installation is included. There’s an air compressor, the twin air-suspension units offered either chrome plated or black anodized, the control switch is included as is a solenoid valve with on-the-fly switch operation along with all mounting and connecting hardware and full instructions. Everything is CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and 303 stainless steel and both systems flush-mount with the frame for a good looking, no-hassle installation. The Legend Air L3 and L9 systems are a direct fit on stock bikes and now all the electrical connections are direct plug-ins, too; there’s no soldering or wire connecting required. This year there’s even a simple control unit added that mounts on the handlebar for easy rider access.
The advantages of a Legend Air suspension system, easy adjustment for comfort, for rider weight, for load and road conditions, are all here and better than ever. It’s all in the FatBook, too, so take a look and call your Drag Specialties rep today.
