Every time you sell a K&N High Flow Air Filter, slide a Filter Service & Recharger Kit up on the counter right next to it. That Recharger Kit will add less than 10 bucks to the ticket, but properly used it’ll add untold miles and years of service to the K&N air filter. Unlike lesser foam or paper filters, the specially treated and oiled gauze element of a K&N is there for the life of the filter. In street applications it’s even warranted for 1 million miles! The key is routine service and re-oiling, and it’s easy. K&N’s Recharger Kit makes it that way.
The goal is to keep the filter looking and performing factory-fresh, just as it came out of the box. When the dirt and grime builds up to the point where you can’t easily distinguish the outer wire mesh covering from the pleated gauze under it then, and only then, is it time for a cleaning and re-oiling. The recommended service goes like this:
First just tap the filter on a hard surface to dislodge any loose debris. Never use compressed air. That’ll damage a K&N filter for good. Next liberally spray on the K&N Cleaner packed in the Service Kit, saturating both the outside and inside of the filter. Let the Cleaner work for about 15 minutes, thoroughly absorbing into and dissolving the built-up dirt. Once the Cleaner’s done its thing rinse the filter clean under running water. When the water runs clear let the filter air-dry. No compressed air. Finally, re-oil the thoroughly dried filter, and here’s where many riders go wrong. Spraying on too much oil is as bad as putting on none at all, yet many people keep spraying on that oil until it’s dripping on the floor. That’s a recipe for tuning woes, especially on FI bikes with their easily clogged injectors. Go for the same deep-red color the filter had when it was new, and the best way to get there is in stages. Spray on some oil and let the filter sit for 15 minutes or so, soaking it all in. If any white spots remain put on just a bit more oil, but don’t over-do it.
