Saddlemen’s Highwayman Elite line packs a lot of value into a little price. With Saddlebag prices from $124.95 to $189.95 for the Jumbo Slant with chrome studs it’s great looking luggage anyone can afford. Canyon de Guadalupe is a natural, primitive campsite offering just the basics (that’s an outhouse), so naturally my girlfriend insisted on packing along her battery-powered hair dryer and espresso maker. The Highwayman Elite Trunk Bag mounted to my Dyna’s luggage rack swallowed it right up. In fact, I ended up giving her one-and-a-half of my Jumbo Highwayman Elite Saddlebags to fill, too. We were only going away for three days, but, well, what can you say. I tucked in my shaving kit, a change of underwear and some hiking boots. The Highwayman Elite line includes three sizes of Saddlebags, plus Sissybar Bags, Trunk Bags and Tool Bags–12 pieces total. All feature a stiff, rugged, “elephant hide” construction and they’re available plain or with brightly chromed studs. All of the Saddlebags, Sissybar Bags and Trunk Bags feature lockable, quick-release buckles hidden cleverly under the straps, and they’re lockable with the padlocks included. The Saddlebags also offer a quick-release attachment to the fender yoke using a heavy-gauge zipper, lockable, too. Packed up and on the road, tents, sleeping bags and girlfriends secured to the bikes, we headed south through L.A, Orange County and San Diego. A couple hours later we were at Mama’s Roadside Bistro, about as fancy as it gets in Tecate. Mama’s famous tamales are as good as it gets, and they seem to last for days without refrigeration making for some fine all-weekend-long dining. Highwayman Elite luggage universally mounts to just about any bike, making this an easy line to sell. Saddlebag supports are recommended (available separately) but the Trunk Bags, Sissybar Bags and Tool Bags include mounting straps that allow fitment to racks, backrests, back seats, and handlebars. Highwayman Elite Saddlebags come in three sizes, too; there’s a Small 12 x 9 x 6 model, a Large 15. 5 x 9.5 x 6 version, and a Jumbo 18 x11 x 6 size. The Tool Bag measures 12 x 5.5, the Sissybar Bag 11 x 8 x 4.75 and the Trunk Bags are 14 x 9 x 10. Loaded up with those tamales and plenty of spares for the weekend we set up the tents and spread out our stuff. I couldn’t believe everything we were able to pack into those Highwayman Elite bags. And thanks to my girlfriend we had fresh espresso every morning. Goes great with tamales! Okay, the trip might be fiction, but those new Saddlemen Highwayman Elite bags aren’t. This is a brand-new line, it’s very real, it fits just about any bike and looks great on it, it’s Saddlemen quality through-and-through–and Drag Specialties has it all. The hair dryer, espresso machine and tamales, well, that part’s up to you. For all the rest, call your rep for more info. |
