Here are the specs. The tall Venom front is an AM41 measuring 130/60R23. This radial tire will neatly fit and show off rims between 3.5 and 4.00 inches wide. The tire itself has a nominal width of 130mm with an approximate overall diameter of 740mm. The rear, an AM42, stretches the tape to new heights with its 280/40R20 dimensions. It’s been designed to fit all those custom rims between 9.5 and 10.5 inches wide. The mounted measurements are an estimated 280mm in width with an overall diameter of approximately 732mm. This 280/40R20 Venom is the world’s first 20-inch DOT approved custom rear tire. With Aramid belts for added stability, this tall radial rear can be paired with a radial, bias belted or cross-ply front tire, and those wind-on Zero-degree Aramid belts restrict tire growth so the rear fender can be mounted tight and close. Both of these new Venoms, the front and the rear, feature Avon’s unique “rim protectors” to guard against road damage to those expensive wheels. This is something usually seen only on the most expensive automotive tires and will be a welcome feature for anyone who’s just peeled off a bundle of cash for a high-dollar set of custom wheels. The tall new Venoms were debuted at the V-Twin Expo and will be available shortly. Major bike builders and wheel suppliers are already tooling up in anticipation. Don’t let news like this make you overlook all those other Venoms, though. Avon Venoms are some of the most popular Harley tires on the market. That giant AM42 330/30R17 Venom-R was introduced in Sturgis last year as original equipment for the ‘05 Bourget bikes and it’s become standard custom equipment since. The 330 Venom has one of the lowest sidewall profiles ever seen on a motorcycle tire. It’s a perfect fit for rims measuring between 11.5 and 12.5 inches wide. With that 330 leading the way Avon pretty much owns the wide market, beginning with the 230/60H15 launched way back in 1998. Three years later Avon followed that with the still popular 250/40HR18 Venom R then the 300/40R17 and 300/35R18. These are all pure-custom tires that fired the imagination of builders everywhere. And now that Harley-Davidson is mounting fat tires as original equipment on more and more of its motorcycles Avon’s custom Venom replacements make perfect sense. There’s an AM42 Venom R 200/55VR18 available, there’s a 180/55VR18 and the 150/80HB16 Venom measures out to a hefty 149 mm/5.8-inch overall width. There’s an even wider version of this one available for modified and custom machines, a 150/80VB16. It measures 154 mm/6.1-inches in overall width. And all of these Venoms have a much more rounded profile then an OE tire for a handling advantage that’s felt immediately. Venoms are great in the wet, too. They’re cool running, they have a softer compound for better grip and that grippy compound lasts. Properly inflated and maintained an Avon Venom can deliver up to twice the mileage of OE rubber. And stepping down in size a bit there are lots of direct-replacement Venoms, too. They’re all offered as wide-whitewalls or in a blackwall configuration. But the big news right now is the launch of those two biggest and tallest Avon Venoms ever, the AM41 130/60R23 and the AM42 280/40R20. Custom wheels now have custom tires to match, and both never looked better. Call your Drag Specialties rep for more info. |
