etzeler started the super-sized muscle-tire trend with the introduction of its ME88 200 series tire in 1995, which at the time was the largest true-motorcycle tire offered for the custom V-twin market. That was followed by the ME880 210, 240, 260, 280 and–to answer the needs of various custom builders in America–in August of 2005 the ME880 300 series tire was introduced at Sturgis. The 300 tire set new standards by being the only tire of its size that is a zero-degree radial, meeting all of Metzeler’s performance standards.
The continuing evolvement of Metzeler’s line of ME880 tires has resulted in the creation of 59 sizes, each designed to upgrade the ride of all V-twins from American to metric. Metzeler’s upgrades are available in three different stages. Stage 1 is a bolt on replacement of OE equipment, providing improved mileage, ride comfort and wet grip. No bike modifications are required for a Stage 1 upgrade yet riders will notice the improved feel of Metzeler’s custom compounds, carcass construction, and rounded contour.
The Stage 2 ME880 upgrade requires modification to the motorcycle for the fitment of wider tires. Modifications include wider wheels, spacers and fenders, giving a bike a more powerful, meaty look with minimal cost.
The Stage 3 upgrade is for achieving a radically muscled stance by installing a rear 240, 260, 280, or 300. It also requires a wide-tire swingarm kit, new rims and fenders. Because of Metzeler’s proven performance custom bike builders such as Eddie Trotta, American Iron Horse, and Independent Cycle Inc. use Metzeler tires exclusively.
All of Metzeler’s top-of-the-line, burly, rear tires are zero-degree radials, ensuring the exceptional V-twin performance. Their advanced silica compound provides high mileage and excellent wet grip. The rayon belting gives a comfortably compliant ride and the groove placement increases directional stability. Because of radial construction, the ME880 tires have minimal diameter deviation at high speed, allowing the tightest fender slam on the planet, if not in the entire solar system. Metzeler takes V-twin performance seriously, developing every new tire through brutal testing to ensure they set standards in looks and ride.
Again for 2006, the Metzeler truck will be at major bike events throughout the season, providing customers with a direct link to the company. As always, the sale of tires to consumers at these events will be through a local dealer, promoting the important one-on-one relationship between enthusiast and retailer.

e warned, Metzeler will be redefining the future of V-twin upgrades at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati this January. Be sure to stop by the Metzeler booth to see the show-stopping introduction of the brawniest tire yet. It’s round and black and made of rubber, and it’s mean. Those using medication or with a heart condition should consult a physician before stopping by. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Shirts with collars are not required. Nurses are optional.
