Tires, never a company to play catch-up, has just jumped into a rapidly
expanding market with a huge potential. Motor scooters, those inner-city/around-town
transportation darlings of Europe, South America and Asia are catching
on in the U.S. faster than a gas station can raise its prices on premium.
According to estimates by the Motorcycle Industry Council, scooter sales
have grown by more than 900% over the past five years. Sales have doubled
and re-doubled from 2000 to 2004, up to more than 86,000 units a year.
Those scooter riders are a diverse group, too. No longer limited to empty-wallet
college students or beret-wearing beatniks, the majority of scooter customers
today are in their 30s or older and they're buying those scooters
to ride on their daily commutes to work and for pure fun on the weekends.
Major manufacturers like Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha have all begun to offer
new models just for riders in the United States, and low-cost imports
from Taiwan, Korea and China have caught on, too.And Avon, itself a big name in scooter tires a few decades back, is right at the forefront once again. Following hot on the heels of the new Avon Viper Sport and Supersport high-performance motorcycle tires we now have the Viper Stryke scooter tires. The Avon Road Hazard Warranty Program, applying to all the company's sport tires like the AV45/46STs and the just released Viper Sport and Supersports, has been updated. Avon has increased the allowable tread depth for a no-questions-asked replacement from the old 1mm of tread wear to a more generous 1.4 millimeter of tread wear. It's a great sales tool, so make sure your sportbike customers know about it. There's a giant new market emerging and Avon is ready for it.
