hor dominated the Los Angeles X Games by taking 10 of 12 possible
medals in the moto events. In two events, Supermoto and Best Trick,
Thor riders swept the podium.
Thor's Doug Henry is a multi-motorsports success story. He retired
from Supercross and motocross in 1999 to become a farmer in his native
Connecticut. But Doug can't resist his own talent on a motorcycle,
so he started racing "for fun" again a few years ago
at selected events. At the Los Angeles X Games the 35-year-old Henry
became an X Games gold medalist by winning the SuperMoto final at the
Home Depot Center. Henry was joined on the podium by eight-time Supercross/Motocross
champion Jeremy McGrath (silver) and 2004 Supercross champion Chad
Reed (bronze). The win was redemption for Henry, who crashed in the
first corner a year ago and finished 14th. By the way, Henry, McGrath
and Reed are all Thor racers, so it was a podium sweep of the Supermoto.
Thor's Travis Pastrana took back his Moto X Freestyle gold medal,
after being beaten for the first time last year by Nate Adams. He needed
just one run in the final Saturday night at the Home Depot Center,
and, for once, didnÕt crash and injure himself trying to break
out a new trick.
Pastrana's gold was his fifth in six
X Games Freestyle finals - his only loss came in 2004, when he crash-landed
a 360 and Nate Adams won his first X Games gold. This time, Pastrana
rolled out a spirited, flip-filled run. His biggest trick was a backflip
saran wrap and he was the only rider to hit The Wall, a quarterpipe-like
obstacle. But the strongest part of his routines was his enthusiastic
play to the crowd. They loved it, and so did the judges. He beat close
friend Kenny Bartram by eight-tenths of a point and defending champion
Nate Adams by two points. And his signature Pastrana Thor gear looks
just as good flipping upside-down as it does with the bling of a gold
medal.
If anything, Moto X Best Trick can be even more exciting then the Freestyle
because you never know what any of these guys might throw down. It
doesn't matter how good the rider is because what counts is
one perfect never-before-seen hit. Even though Travis Pastrana stole
pre-event headlines with rumors of a special bike for bar spins, Jeremy
"Twitch" Stenberg
landed the big money trick with a 90-footer backflip on his first of
two runs. It was the longest backflip in X Games history, and for extra
sauce, Thor-clad Stenberg added a no-footed turn down to a one-handed
landing. The gold was Twitch's first at the X Games. Travis
second, Nate Adams third. And, if you're counting, another sweep
of the podium for Thor riders.
Viewers with a sharp "Thor eye" may have caught our newest
athlete Ryan Nyquist picking up a bronze medal in BMX "Street
freestyle." Ryan was "bustin out" Thor
jeans, t-shirts and our Core moto gloves.
