They
say it’s the strongest, toughest gearbox ever –and they could
be right
ig power is the name of the game these days. 120-plus cubic inch
engines are putting out double the horsepower and torque of a stock
Harley motor. Couple that power with one of those gigantic rear tires
everyone’s using and the super-positive clutch that’s become
part of the picture and the loads on the transmission skyrocket. They’re
soaring way past what anyone ever expected a motorcycle transmission
to have to deal with.
Anyone but JIMS, that is. If you’re looking
for a super-strong transmission–or a transmission retrofit kit–here
it is. The Fat 5 Overdrive, just introduced, just might be the strongest,
toughest gearbox ever made. By taking advantage of its new and more
compact shifter technology, JIMS was able to increase the width and
strength of every gear inside the transmission. The width increases
vary from 18- to 53-percent, the percentage of increase depending on
the loads each gear set must carry. The Fat 5, with its .886 overdriven
5th, is offered as a complete transmission or as a FatGear Super Kit
that can be installed into an existing transmission case.
The Fat 5 transmission and FatGear Super Kit fit both Evo and Twin
Cam chassis. With an explanation. Both the complete transmission and
the Super Kit use a new trapdoor design that’s .870-in. wider
than stock, so these transmissions and Super Kits aren’t exactly
a straight bolt-for-bolt drop-in replacement. Modifications to the
exhaust brackets, for instance, will become necessary. For that reason
JIMS has positioned the Fat 5 and the FatGear Super Kit as “custom
application” parts.
Fair enough. Moving some brackets around, and maybe an oil spout, isn’t
much of a price to pay for a set of transmission gears matched to the
power of a mega-motor and the bite of a mega-rear tire. In the power
crazy V-twin world of today an ultra-strong transmission has been the
missing link. It isn’t missing any more. The JIMS Fat 5 and FatGear
Super Kits are here, and Drag Specialties has them. Call your rep today.
