dds
are a lot of your Softail customers would like to convert their bikes
to the fat-tire look. But the odds are just as good that many of
them are intimidated by what looks like a lengthy and expensive undertaking,
one that can sometimes involve a long wait for parts, a lot of downtime
while the work is being done, and a huge bill when the job is finally
completed. So they walk wistfully past the wide-tire bikes they see
at rallies and shows, and dream of the day when they can afford
to hire a shop to transform their own bikes from mild to wild. Now
you can turn those sad faces into happy ones with the new Doherty
200mm Fat Tire kit, a wide-tire conversion that doesn’t require
cashing in the kids’ college
fund, or waiting for your bike so long that you’re too old
to ride it when you finally get it back.
The Doherty 200mm Fat Tire kit, available exclusively from Drag Specialties,
fits Softail models from 1987 on, and comes with just about everything
you need to replace the narrow stock Softail rear wheel with a wider
wheel. Anyone with mechanical savvy, a few hand tools, some factory
pullers, and a shop manual can do the job at home. And it doesn’t
require disassembly of the transmission, either.
The centerpiece of the kit is an 18x5.5 40-spoke rear wheel with
a drop-center steel rim and stainless steel spokes. The hub is made
of chromed billet aluminum and has a unique offset you can’t
get anywhere else. It comes with seals and 2000-and-later bearings
already installed. A heavy-duty rear axle and pre-cut axle spacers
are also included. The kit comes without a rear tire so you can choose
your own to match your front tire.
Other parts in the kit include custom-made CNC front and rear sprockets.
The front sprocket is made of chrome-moly, and has a proprietary
offset not available anywhere else in the aftermarket. There’s also a
front sprocket seal and spacer, a sprocket nut lock plate, chrome-plated
rotor bolts, grade 8 chrome-plated sprocket bolts, and a Superbike-quality
O-ring chain. The kit final drive ratio is the same as stock, so there’s
no need to recalibrate the speedometer.
The kit’s rear fender will accept stock or aftermarket seat
pan shapes, and will support two people with its internal struts.
It comes in two styles, one without a taillight, and the other with
a flush-mount LED taillight that incorporates the taillight, brake
light, turn signals, and license plate light, and plugs directly
into the stock Harley wiring harness. Installing the fender requires
cutting the stock fender strut rails off of the frame so the 200mm
tire will fit.
Sometimes it’s the little stuff that can bring a job to a screeching
halt, so the Doherty 200mm Fat Tire kit comes with most of it–a
chain guard and splash guard, a primary gasket set, fender mounting hardware,
a late-model electrical tray, and of course complete instructions. And
if you need even more help than that, Doherty Machine offers excellent
tech support–just give them a call at 1-800-956-9409.
All of the major parts in the kit are made in the U.S.A., and all
kit parts are pre-fit on a fixture before they’re shipped so there
are no nasty surprises when the bike’s all apart on the garage
floor. Doherty Machine offers full warranty and tech support on all
of its products, and the 200mm Fat Tire kit is no exception.
Don’t let your Softail customers
walk around moping a minute longer. With everything needed to convert
a plain old narrow-wheel bike to a fat-tire head-turner except the
tire itself, the Doherty 200mm Fat Tire kit can not only turn their
dreams into reality, but make your parts department a happy place,
too. Call your rep today for more information.
