Following in the footsteps of fellow Michigan natives Jay Springsteen, Bart Markel, and Scott Parker, up and coming flat track racer Bryan Smith is just one of the many talented riders who choose SuperTrapp.

arlier this year, we told you about some of the great new products that SuperTrapp is offering for the 2005 riding season like the new-for-Sportsters Mean Mothers and SuperMegs, the Kerker Double Espresso, Phantom Pipes and new X-Pipe accessories. We could go on, but we figured you’d rather hear it from racers, customers and of course, dealers just like you. So, what have these people been saying about SuperTrapp?
According to Joe Brown of Hourglass Racing, SuperTrapp is the best-kept secret in performance exhausts. The secret must be getting out though because in a recent survey of Harley owners by Motorcycle Industry magazine, SuperTrapp was owned by 12 percent of the riders surveyed. More telling, though, is the fact that of the riders surveyed, 21 percent plan to make a SuperTrapp their next exhaust purchase. It seems more customers are starting to find out about the performance gains SuperTrapp offers.
Wes Brown of Pinellas Park, Florida’s Cycle-Rama knows performance; he is a well-decorated dyno-shootout champion. “For the dyno-shootouts, the ‘hype of the pipe’ is not important, what it really comes down to is the pipe that makes the number is the pipe that goes on our bike,” Brown said. “We tried other exhausts, but in the end, Cycle-Rama chose a SuperTrapp exhaust for the V-Rod that won the Easyrider Dyno Drags and the AMA Horsepower Shootout.”
One of Brown’s customers, Dave Thomas, turned to him for performance advice. “I had been using a competitor’s pipe forever because I didn’t want to give up the performance,” Thomas said. “I hated the looks of the pipe but nothing would perform with it. I had Wes try out 12 or 13 different pipes before he got to the SuperTrapp. I was just shocked with the results. I picked up 4 HP over the competitor’s pipe by switching to the 2:1 SuperMegs. I’m up to 132 HP on my Dyna Wide Glide III. I never let Wes take that pipe off of my bike.”
Brown said that once some of his other customers saw the dyno results for themselves, demand for SuperTrapp increased. “People love to see results like that,” he said. “When they see 132 HP, they have to have the same exhaust system on their own bike.”
Tom Todd, whose 1989 Harley Davidson XL graced the cover of American Iron magazine in February 2005, shares why he chose SuperTrapp for his stunning bike. “There are two main reasons I went to SuperTrapp,” he said. “First, they fit correctly, and second, they make good power. As far as I’m concerned, they make more power than any 2:1 exhaust system out there. The SuperTrapp 2:1 will gain you 15 percent and I’ve proven that on a dyno.”
Be sure to keep an eye out for more of Todd’s bikes, equipped with a SuperTrapp of course, in upcoming issues of American Iron.

When it comes to performance, the bottom line is that nobody takes it more seriously than racers. That is why the majority of AMA Grand National flat track racers chose SuperTrapp. Bryan Bigelow, the 2001 SuperTrapp SuperTracker National Champion, is convinced SuperTrapp is the best performance exhaust available. “As far as competitor’s product go, we try everything else,” he said. “If there is a better product out there, then we are going to use it, and that is a fact. We don’t care how much they pay us, if there was something that went a little bit faster, we would be using it.”
Racers appreciate the durability of a SuperTrapp. Jim Wagner of Doc’s Harley-Davidson acknowledges that SuperTrapp’s quality of construction helps his race team. “The construction on the Megaphones is wonderful,” he said. “They are lightweight but built like tanks. A key for us in the dirt track races is that the stainless steel components are so durable that nothing really fazes them from a chemical standpoint.”
SuperTrapp was the pioneer of tuneable disc technology in the early 1970s, and the advantages of the diffuser disc system can still be seen today especially on the racetrack. AMA Flat Track racer Willie McCoy says, “I have tried competitor’s products, but the SuperTrapp exhaust is just so tuneable for each situation that I always end up going back to SuperTrapp because it has always performed the best.”
It’s not just racers who can benefit from SuperTrapp’s tuneability. Wes Brown of Cycle-Rama explains why his customers prefer the flexibility of SuperTrapp. “With a non-tuneable exhaust, you get what you get, but with a SuperTrapp, you can tune it to a customer’s preference,” Brown said. “You can tune a SuperTrapp for maximum horsepower, but not every customer is looking for that. SuperTrapp gives you the option to pump up the torque as well.”

Dave Thomas agrees, “The whole key to a SuperTrapp is the tuneability,” he said. “Whereas other pipes work great on some bikes and not so well on others, the SuperTrapp is totally tuneable for different applications.”
Not only does the tuneability of SuperTrapp offer riders a chance to adjust to specific conditions, it also allows them to pinpoint a motor’s elusive “sweet spot.” Wes Brown explains, “In the performance market, people want to see the big numbers. In this market, pipes can really make or break you. The advantage of using SuperTrapp is that they have the tuneable system so you can find the sweet spot that the motor likes.”
Ton Pels is general manager of Zodiac International, the largest distributor of V-Twin aftermarket products in Europe, and he has seen a recent increase in interest in SuperTrapp’s Paul Yaffe Road Legends series. “We see some customers who still buy the classic design of the 2:1,” he said. “Recently though, we are starting to see more customers prefer the modern designs of the SuperTrapp Road Legends series designed by Paul Yaffe.” This popularity is also seen in the growing number of custom bikes sporting the SuperTrapp Yaffe design.
Sound and style are merely the icing on the cake when compared to the outstanding performance the SuperTrapp exhausts offer. Joe Bisha, who turns the wrenches for the legendary Jay Springsteen, pretty much sums it up when he says, “A lot of competitor’s pipes only give you sound and style. Some pipes lose you 5 HP right away. If someone is looking for performance from their exhaust, I recommend SuperTrapp because I can guarantee them a performance gain. If they are only looking for something loud, I tell them to pick out their own pipe.”

SuperTrapp Industries is giving away a custom made Paul Yaffe Original “super bike” in its 2005 promotion: SuperTrapp, Super Bike, Super Prize. For every qualifying system sold, the dealer will receive one entry into the lottery drawing.
The SuperTrapp, Super Bike, Super Prize contest is open to all U.S. dealers of SuperTrapp V-Twin systems and will run from January 1, 2005 until December 31, 2005.
