down a steep, boulder-strewn slope, you miss a vertical section that
appears without warning. You’re pitched over the front of the bike
and fall the next 20 feet, potentially resulting in serious consequences,
especially for your upper body and back. Anyone who rides a mountain
bike faces these types of real life scenarios and that’s exactly
the reason why Alpinestars has developed the Bionic Protection jacket
technology.With the combined help of Honda G-Cross star rider and twice World Downhill MTB Champion Greg Minaar, as well as “The Godfather” of Freestyle Motocross, Mike Metzger, Alpinestars has developed two jackets which are not only comfortable in all conditions, but which can also cope with the big falls that are an inevitable part of mountain biking and motocross. Constructed from technical stretch net with reinforcing Kevlar on the back, the Bionic Protection jacket features external, re-enforced seams with external protectors stitched onto the outer surface for a combination of excellent protection, comfort and strength. Entry is provided by a semi-auto locking zipper and the jacket is secured around the waist with a wide, adjustable belt. Protection covers shoulders, elbows, chest and back, all the key areas of the upper body. Alpinestars’ certified GP protectors, consisting of a hard outer PU shell and padded with a bio foam base, absorb and disperse harsh energy delivered to the shoulders and elbows. The protection sits comfortably on the rider at all times, a key attribute for those who spend all day on the bike. Chest protection is provided by two large protectors, either side of a self-locking zip, allowing freedom of movement and optimum range of motion while covering the ribs, heart and lungs. Back protection comes in the form of a highly technical, body hugging, ergonomic protector designed to move with the spine using Alpinestars patented central linkage design. This unique cross torsion system ensures that shocks, impacts and the residual energy associated with a heavy fall are dissipated and absorbed over the widest possible surface possible. While the middle and upper back are protected by the hard overlapping plates, the base of the spine is covered by a “soft tail” protective pad. The soft tail allows optimum flexibility and comfort to the rider without compromising comfort or safety. The back protector is removable for cleaning and maintenance. Rider comfort is clearly a key necessity for any apparel or protective system and Alpinestars has worked very hard to ensure that the Bionic Jacket is well ventilated, padded and adjustable to suit individual preferences. Arms and shoulders feature adjustable straps, while a wide kidney strap ensures that the jacket fits snugly, without hindering on-bike performance. With the Bionic protection jacket designed to be worn under an MX jersey, or similar MTB apparel, Alpinestars has also created a version of the Bionic Protection jacket to be worn over a jersey. Purpose-built for those with a passion for freestyle motocross, the S-MX Bionic Protection jacket has been researched and developed by freestyle motocross living legend Mike Metzger. One of the true pioneers of the sport, not to mention its primary trick innovator, Metzger’s uncompromising approach ensured that the S-MX version was built for its specific focus: FMX. Like the Bionic jacket, stretch, moisture wicking Lycra forms the basis of the S-MX. The SM-X also features a compression style fit to help reduce muscle fatigue. Alpinestars’ S-MX shoulder protectors feature technology gleaned from its MotoGP roadrace program, where riders can hit the asphalt at over 200 mph. This technology allows a rider excellent protection while sliding and rolling after a fall as the protectors disperse impact and sit comfortably over the shoulders and upper arms to fend off the harmful energy of a sideways fall. The back protection system is the same as the Bionic, but the chest differs, with a molded one-piece guard to protect the rider’s Sternum.
