Drag Specialties “Bolt-On” customs sure have proved popular.
They’re definitely inspiring. The idea behind all these builds
is to show what’s possible by simply adding the right FatBook parts
to a stock Harley-Davidson, which of course is what most of your customers
are riding. Using this formula some of the best builders in the country
have turned OE Harleys into head-turning customs, and the series has
covered the whole Harley-Davidson lineup. Dave Perewitz and Tank Ewsichek
have completed make-overs on the bagger bikes, Dave transforming a Road
King and Tank turning an ex-police bike on its head, appearance-wise.
Doesn’t look a thing like an OE Softie, does it? Don centered the
build of this 2000 FXST around a Custom Valley 200 Wide Drive Swing Arm
Kit, matching that with a Russ Wernimont 9-in. Cruiser Rear Fender. It’s
long and wide, Fat Boy-style. Don dropped the bike way down, too, using
Ohlins Clear Softail Shocks and Accutronix 5-Degree Smooth Triple Trees
with Perse Smooth Spherical Lowers. “I wanted to make the bike
look longer,” Don says, explaining his thinking. “Those bolt-ons
gave the bike some length, a real custom look without cutting the frame,
which is pretty rare for me. I never took a saw to this frame.” A
Russ Wernimont 5.6-gallon Smooth Fuel Tank and a High End Butt Crack
Seat complement that long and low look.
Don went with Carriage Works Spider wheels here, a 21 x 2.15 for the
front and an 18 x 5.5 at the rear. They’re fit with Metzeler ME880s.
And since he left the frame alone, or at least the front half of it,
Don painted the rest of the bike black to match that factory-applied
finish. House Of Kolor Passion Purple flames with turquoise striping
wake things up. Don kept the chrome to a minimum, too, even blacking
out the oil tank. A nice selection of the bright bits sprinkled throughout
add interest. Things like those Vance & Hines Competition Drag Pipes.
There’s a tasty mix of Pro One, Ness, Thunder Heart, Accutronix,
S&S, Magnum, Drag Specialties and even some of Hotop’s own
pieces here, too – all listed in the FatBook. Keeping the bike
real world, Don even mounted a horn and a set of directionals on the
rear.
“It’s just a little boulevard cruiser,” is how Hotop
characterizes the finished build. “There’s nothing too tough
here, either. This is definitely a bike most guys could do themselves.” So
what started as a Softail Standard isn’t standard anymore. Check
out the accompanying build sheet carefully, then show this one to your
Softail-riding customers. They’ll love it, and everything needed
to build something like it is available through Drag Specialties. 
The 21-inch Carriage
Works Spider front wheel is mounted with a Metzeler ME880 tire. B.
Like the front, the 18-inch rear wheel came from Carriage Works and

speedo is from Auto Meter. D. By the time Hotop had the Custom Valley

the bike was started to lose its showroom look. And those Vance & Hines

F. The primary cover on the left side is such a large and highly visible
part, you better get that right when you do a project. Hotop went with
the Pro One cover.
