his time a year ago, the world waited to see if the newly-released Kawasaki KX250F could be developed into a competitive alternative for the 125cc two-strokes in the AMA 125cc Supercross series. Would the larger displacement that is allowed by the AMA for four-stroke machines compensate for the added weight that a 250cc machine would have to carry? What few people were aware of, though, was that Mitch Payton and his crew at Pro Circuit weren’t just planning to put a pipe and some decals on and go racing. To the contrary, Payton had the first KX250Fs he could get his hands on stripped to the bone and every part of the motorcycle was analyzed to see what they could do make it perform better, while at the same time lightening and strengthening wherever possible.
When the AMA Supercross series kicked off at Anaheim in January, the Pro Circuit team impressed the world when Ivan Tedesco took the 125 West win in the machine’s racing debut. Ivan reeled off five main event wins in a row before settling for 2nd place at the San Francisco round. He then bounced back to win the final two races of the season to wrap up 125 West Supercross Championship for Kawasaki and Pro Circuit.
At the final AMA Motocross of the season at Glen Helen, James “Bubba” Stewart proved that Tedesco’s Supercross success was no fluke when he romped the field on an almost identical KX250F.
For 2005, Pro Circuit will again have Tedesco in the saddle of a KX250F in addition to Stephane Roncada, Matt Walker, Paul Carpenter and former 125cc National Motocross Champion Grant Langston.
