hen it comes to selling seats, do your customer a favor and open the FatBook to page 61. The Drag Specialties seat selections begin right there, and right there is as far as you and that customer need to go.
Flipped open that catalog? The selections go on forever, don’t they? There are something like 30-plus seat styles for the Softail alone, with applications right up to the newest 2004 models. FLs, Dynas and Sportsters are covered, too, and so are Big Twins dating all the way back to 1954. There are Drag Specialties seats for customs, too, both aftermarket-framed and OE-based.
All that style is backed with serious quality. Drag Specialties seats are made in Rogers, Minnesota; every one is hand-crafted, and the raw goods used are exceptional. Kevin Lehan, who designs the seats and has run the Drag Specialties seat company since 1974, sees to that. Most seats are formed with a urethane foam mixed to Drag Specialties’ specifications, and most often the covering material is a heavy-duty vinyl also made to Drag Specialties’ specs. It’s made for outdoor use and for this very specific application. Everything is die-cut for absolute consistency, every piece is identical and fits like a glove.
What you don’t see is just as detailed. The seat bases are form-fit ABS plastic and all mounting brackets are chrome-plated. In most applications the seat pan is 100 percent carpeted, and for even more paint protection many Drag Specialties seats include rubber bumpers, too. All the engineering and development is done in-house, and from the design concept to the finished product the Drag Specialties crew is 100 percent in control. Anyone who handles a seat as it’s assembled can reject that seat if it’s not up to par. There’s an all-encompassing final check, too. Every seat is perfect before it goes in the box.
All of this—with custom stitching, ostrich inserts and even flame patterns if you want it—is competitively priced. There’s real value for the dollar here, and there are some really interesting features offered, too. In many applications, for instance, a seat’s decorative fringe accent is removable, giving a real two-for-one style option. And custom orders are no problem; color changes can be accommodated, and vinyl can always be switched for leather.
And here’s a sales tip: Kevin says be sure to show your customer the pillow-style seats. They’re great looking and they give the appearance of comfort because they are comfortable. They’re popular sellers. Check with your Drag rep, he’ll tell you. He’ll also get you set up with everything else you’ll need here, too. Give him a call.
