A 2004 Parts Unlimited catalog and a little ingenuity helped modify this 2004 Honda Sportrax 90 into a real competitor.

arts Unlimited district rep Mike Ego put together this tricked out 2004 Honda Sportrax 90 for his twelve-year-old son Brian. “He started racing last year after showing no interest all his earlier life,” Mike explained.
Brian’s initial ride was not a competitive machine. So Mike presented him with a brand-new Honda TRX 90 on Christmas Day. But recognizing that this machine also had some shortcomings for competitive use, Mike initiated a build-up to prepare the bike for this season’s races. Enlisting the aid of some of his dealers to handle the fabrication and machine work, he selected all of the off-the-shelf parts right out of the Parts Unlimited catalog. “Being that I make my living selling accessories,” Mike says, “what better showcase could I have.”
The biggest mods are up front, where suspension travel has been increased from the stock 2.6-inches to a whopping 6.5-inches. JRD Mechanical, in Glassboro, NJ, fabricated the front A-arms, while Works Performance custom-built the shocks. Spindles and brake calipers scavenged from a Sportrax 400 EX were added, with Braking Wave rotors and pads to replace the stock drums. Brake lines are from Goodrich. Numerous other modifications have been made throughout the chassis, including a Regina O-ring chain in place of the stock equipment. ITP Holeshot radial tires on offset ITP wheels are fitted all around. “The handling is incredible compared to the stock stuff,” Mike reports.
The engine remains at the 90cc class limit, but compression has been bumped to 14-to-1, with a performance cam and a Pro Circuit pipe installed. Joker Machine billet goodies were also added. Vertucci Power Equipment (VPE) in Kutztown, PA, did the engine and machining work, including adapting the Xtreme electric starter. Wiring was handled by B&B Sales and Service in Lancaster, PA.
Maier fenders with Ceet graphics, Renthal handlebars with Moose handwarmers, a Motion Pro throttle and cable, DG bumper and skid plate, and PowerMadd’s Star Series handguards almost complete the external appearance. “We will be adding fender extensions,” Mike forecasted. Altogether it looks mighty impressive.
“We’ve done a couple of District 6 hare scrambles,” Mike says. “I get to spend the day with my son now, and that makes the cost worth it.”

Major modifications were made to the front, with fabricated front A-arms and custom-built shocks that helped increase suspension travel from 2.6 inches to 6.5 inches.

Some of the items selected from the Parts Unlimited catalog include a Pro Circuit T-4 pipe, ITP wheels and tires, Renthal handlebars, Motion Pro throttle and Regina chain.

Thanks to his tricked-out new Quad, 12-year-old Brian Ego has raced a few District 6 Hare Scrambles.
