his one’s definitely a lot of fun.” Kim Suter has that right. The latest FatBook special, and the first from KC Creations, is right in style and right in time, too. Everything old is new again, and this XL-style chopper has that ’70s-era retro deal pegged dead-on.
     As always, this FatBook build uses Drag Specialties parts almost exclusively. Run your eyes down the parts sheet, it’s all there. The frame is classic Paughco, a 30-degree Sportster rigid. The front end is a matching Paughco Springer. The engine is XL-based, too. It’s a rip-snorting 100-incher from S&S. “That’s something else we haven’t done in years,” Kim says. “We haven’t built a Sportster chopper around here in…, like forever.” It used to be quite an undertaking to put together a 100-cubic-inch XL motor. Now all it takes is a call to Drag Specialties. The transmission is right out of the catalog, too, a Baker 6-speed.
     Working with that Paughco frame and front end, that big-inch S&S Sportster engine and the Baker 6-speed as the main ingredients, Kim and the guys in Overland Park, Kansas, added some special touches of their own, too. For instance, the oil tank/battery mount situation has been neatly reworked. Look closely. That Drag Specialties battery is down low, in front of the rear Wernimont fender. Kim put it there to clean up the profile. The exhaust got some extra attention, too. Starting with a set of BUB Jug Hugger pipes designed for a Softail, Kim tweaked them to complement this XL frame/engine combination. Kim made the sissybar/fender support, too, as well as the sprocket cover on the transmission. Rounding out the extras, he cut the fender mounts off the front end. “I can’t stand the look of a fender on a Springer,” is Kim’s explanation for that little modification. Keeping things simple, the cleaned-up legs were painted to match the bike.
     Short and tight, and with an Avon 140/70V-18 rear and Venom MH 90H-21 front on Drag Specialties’ laced 60-spokers, the bike is one sweet ride. Quick-handling, too, thanks to that 30-degree frame. And quick, period, thanks to the 100-inch S&S and 6-speed Baker. The bike’s packed solid with all the good stuff, too, things like a Barnett Scorpion clutch, JayBrake controls, a Headwinds light, and the list goes on. Check it out. And check it all out in person at one of the rallies when you get the chance. It’s a looker. Scott Thomas and Keith Hanson saw to that, using House of Kolor Lime Gold Candy with orange and blue accent striping. Period perfect, and one more example of what’s possible working with the FatBook. Everything you need is right there, whether it’s a pro-street bike you’re building, a fat-tire cruiser/bruiser—or a classic XL chop. We sure have it easy these days, and isn’t it great!

(E) The D&M air cleaner kit increases airflow approximately 20 percent more than an OEM air cleaner, and can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

(F) This Pauchco custom wide Springer front fork is 28 inches long and +3 inches over stock. It features mounting points for dual disc brakes but not for a front fender.
