ith EBC in all the Parts Unlimited warehouses it’s easier than ever to put EBC pads on your shelf. There are a few new compounds, kits and packages you’ll want to know about, too, like the re-developed organic X-Pads, the sintered-metallic MXS pads, and while we’re talking friction materials, the Dirt Racer Clutch (DRC).
First those organic X-Pads. Why switch to organic when, since the mid-’90s, virtually every manufacturer of off-road machinery has shipped their bikes with sintered metallic pads OE? Because some riders just don’t like the hard-biting characteristics of those sintered metallic pads. In slippery conditions, and especially with big four-stroke bikes, too much rear brake can lock up the wheel at the most inappropriate times and stall the engine. In trail riding it’s a real issue. Organic brake pads are much more linear in their braking and they’re also easier on the rotors. EBC’s organic X-Pads, now powder-coated red, have been re-formatted for a performance increase, too, and the new compounding ups the wear factor by 20-plus percent.
Of course EBC BRAKES has sintered pads, too. The Motocross Sintered (MXS) is a high-quality American-made sintered metallic bronze/copper alloy. It’s an OE replacement/upgrade with something extra: A replacement brake pad pin is included in the packaging. Fresh pads deserve fresh pins because the originals get damaged and worn. With these pads that replacement pin is part of the deal and so is a longer life span. By virtue of their design and compounding, which doesn’t generate the same level of heat as a factory pad, MXS pads don’t need the extra shielding most manufacturers install. It can be removed to gain an additional 1 mm in the pads themselves. That’s significant, considering the size of brake pads these days; to eliminate weight manufacturers have downsized the brakes and brake-fluid reservoirs. Modern brake pads are about half the size of what they once were. Those thicker MXS pads make a noticeable difference.
And that brings up a great tip from EBC: The best thing you can do for any off-road bike’s brake system, they say, is replace the factory-installed brake fluid with a high-temperature DOT 4 fluid with at least a 600-degree Fahrenheit rating. With the small amount of fluid used in most late-model bikes it’s critical that the brake fluid be the best. Many times when riders lose their pedal in the heat of competition it isn’t because of the pads or rotors—it’s that factory fluid actually boiling away. Tuck that one away for future use.
Tuck this away, too: EBC has some great dirt-bike clutches. The Dirt Racer Clutch (DRC) is a complete kit, too. Everything’s in one package with one part number. Included are the friction plates, the steels and the springs, everything needed to make replacement easy. That’s in the warehouse, too, so call your rep. Riders rely on EBC BRAKES and Clutch Kits, and Parts Unlimited has it all.
